  • 2 oz Patrón Silver
  • 3 oz Fever-Tree Ginger Beer
  • .5 oz Lime juice
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Candied ginger for garnish

Smoking Gun Tequila Mule

Mexicans were granted a constitutional right to carry guns in the late 19th century. Guns played a huge role in the fight for independence of the Mexican people. However, in 1960 the lawmakers deemed it necessary to amend the constitution and limit the possession of guns to those in the armed forces.

Enjoy the smoky goodness of this cocktail which pays homage to the gun-toting Mexicans. The smoke depicts the smoke that comes out from the old powder guns after it was fired.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Don Fermin Reposado
  • ¾ oz. fresh Ginger Syrup
  • 1 whole lime juiced
  • ¼ oz. simple syrup
  • 3 dashes angostura bitters
  • 3 drops saline solution
  • Smoked cherrywood

Steps to make

  1. Using a funnel, pour in some Reposado tequila into a bottle or container, light some smoked cherrywood, and enclose it with the tequila. Set aside.

What Food Does It Go Well With

The foods here were selected to pair well with tequila and have some Mexican origin to tie the flavors together. These are just some of the choices but with the extensive Mexican cuisine, anything is possible.

Jalapeno Poppers

Cheesy jalapeno poppers crusted with homemade bread crumbs spiced with cilantro. Deep-fry these into a crisp for 7 minutes. Yum!

Chili Fish

Fish and tomato sauce with a slight tang and spiciness pairs well with tequila and tequila-based cocktails. The fish strips are battered and fried then cooked in the chili-tomato sauce. This works well as a rice topper, too.

One-Pot Saffron Spaghetti with Shrimp and Mussels

Another perfect dish to pair with tequila cocktails are seafoods - here shrimp and mussels. The Spanish roots of this dish works well with tequila. Dinner is done in 20 minutes.

Buffalo Hot Wing Empanada

American meets Mexican in this mash up of two classic favorites - buffalo wings and empanadas. Mix up the buffalo wing spices with the diced chicken and wrap it up. Pop it in the oven or if you don’t have an oven, you can deep-fry it. Skip the egg wash if you fry it. This is perfect for the fruity versions of the Mexican Mule.

Creamy Garlic Chicken Breasts

These seasoned chicken breasts were breaded and fried and then cooked in creamy cheesy sauce. For a crispier version, just simmer the sauce until it slightly thick and drizzle over the fried chicken breast just before eating. This is perfect with the simpler versions of Mexican Mule.

FAQs

Do copper mugs make Moscow Mule taste better?

Copper mugs enhance the flavor of Moscow Mule because it keeps it cold longer than when served in conventional glasses. The very cold temperature of the drink turns down the acidity of the lemon juice. It also lessens the spiciness of the ginger beer, making it more pleasant to the taste.

Is ginger beer fattening?

Depending on the brand, ginger beers have 12-15 calories per ounce. Each 12-ounce serving packs 40-45 grams or 10 teaspoons of sugar. If you drink at least 4 cans of it per week and have no workout routine to lose it, you are bound to gain 3.5kgs per year, given that the other food you eat stays the same.

Are Moscow Mule mugs good for coffee?

Yes, Moscow Mule mugs can be used to serve hot drinks such as coffee. However, it is not recommended as the high conductivity of the copper mugs makes the entire mug very hot. Drink at your own risk.

Why does a Moscow Mule have to be in a copper cup?

Moscow Mule does not have to be served in copper mugs always but these mugs were made with the Moscow Mule in mind, so it is best to use these specific mugs. Moscow Mules are also traditionally served in highball and Collins glasses.

Can you get drunk off of ginger beer?

Most ginger beers are non-alcoholic even if they carry the name beer, which is misleading, by the way. The only plausible reason why it is called beer is because of the brewing process. But hops were not added into it and the grains used were not malted. Most have less than 0.5% ABV which means it has some alcohol content but not enough to be considered an alcoholic drink.

There are, however, alcoholic ginger beers ginger beers range from 4 to 8% ABV. You can get drunk with these especially if you drink it fast or if you are a lightweight.
