Fireball is not a schnapps but a whiskey although it is also flavored with cinnamon and sweeteners. As it is, it is much darker than the schnapps and uses cinnamon bark while cinnamon whiskey is artificially flavored with cinnamon syrup.
Fireball cinnamon whiskey was recalled in Finland, Sweden and Norway in 2014 because it contains excessive levels of propylene glycol, also known as anti-freeze. However, while it does not pass the EU requirements, it is not banned in the US as propylene glycol is considered as safe, according to the US FDA. However, as of 2018, it stopped using propylene glycol and is now accepted in the EU.
Depending on the makers, schnapps may have a slight difference. European schnapps is made by distilling fruits together with a strong distilled spirit and has an ABV of 32%. It is usually drunk straight.
American schnapps, on the other hand, are made by steeping fruits in alcohol and are often referred to as fruit-flavored liqueurs. It has a lower ABV than the European schnapps and is best used in cocktails.
